Activities. The Chemistry Festival will be organized around 4 main activities, designed and taken care of by volunteers from Monash University, Latrobe University, the University of Melbourne and Deakin University.
Each session will first start by a brief but important safety demonstration and video. The activities will each last for 15 minutes and groups will rotate between the four Chemistry booths. All the chemicals used in these activities are house-hold chemicals and used in concentrations and contents perfectly safe to handle with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment - mandatory for the participants! |
HostingThe uttermost priority is to ensure the safe handling and performance during the booth. Each student attending the event will be provided with a comprehensive safety briefing and activity description prior to manipulating.
Personal Protective Equipment (goggles, lab-coats and gloves when advised) shall be worn at all times. |
StorageThe activities will be explained through sets of cards and animations displayed during the event. The students are invited to ask questions to the volunteers and try the proposed experiments in accordance with the guidelines provided.
Explanations about the chemical or physico-chemical processes will be provided and discussed in small teams of students. |
CustomizationThe Chemistry Festival should be fun!
So please join us and participate during the RACI Centenary Congress! |

pH Sensing
We know that pure water is neutral, but what is chemical neutrality? And why is your lemon juice that acid? Acidity and alkalinity, as neutrality, are key words in chemistry. Learn more during our hands-on demonstration

Photocatalysis Remediation
Have you ever wondered why your sunscreen contains titanium dioxide (TiO2)? What if I told you that we could use some tiny TiO2 particles to purify water with a little help from...light?
Find out the principles of photocatalytic removal of organic molecules from water with our demonstration booth.

Chemical AbsorptionDo you know what babies have in common? They remind us how we can use chemistry in a wise way to benefit and improve our lifestyle. In fact, baby underwear showcase how powerful chemical absorption is. From nappies to gas masks, from babies to firemen: learn how absorption works.
